2026 Editor's Note: Modern taxonomy classifies the polar bear as Ursus maritimus, noting it is the largest extant species of bear and land carnivore. While this text lists the Grizzly Bear and Kadiak Bear separately, they are now considered subspecies of the brown bear, Ursus arctos. The American black bear remains a culturally significant species, serving as the live mascot for Baylor University since 1917. (Ed: GG 2026-08-11)
