This species is the Pacific Coast representative of the Spanish mackerel which it very closely resembles and from which it differs only in the more posterior insertion of the soft dorsal and in the colouration. It is known only from Mazatlan, reaches a length of 2 1/2 feet, and is not highly valued as food, but why it is not we are unable to say.
Colour, silvery, dark steel-blue on the back; sides with numerous round spots of the same colour as the back, 3 rows below and 1 above the lateral line; spinous dorsal all black; anal white; posterior surface of pectoral entirely black, anterior yellowish with blackish borders; caudal black. A large example, probably a male, had 5 rows of spots below lateral line, these spots decreasing in size anteriorly toward the belly, but extending nearly to base of ventral fin.
