Colouration: A handsome little snake. Red or deep orange above, with black cross-bands, extending downward nearly to the abdominal plates; head black with exception of the snout, which is red or orange. Abdomen white; on the tail the black markings form complete rings.
Distribution: Texas to Arizona; northward to Utah; southward into Sonora, Mexico.
