Yellow Avens

Geum strictum. Rose Family.

Somewhat hairy; three to five feet high. Stem-leaves.--Divided into from three to five leaflets. Flowers.--Golden yellow. Calyx.--Five-cleft; usually with a small bract between the divisions. Corolla.--Of five broad petals. Stamens and Pistils.--Numerous; the latter enlarging finally into a round, burr-like head. The bright flowers of the yellow avens are found in the moist meadows during the summer, finally giving way to the troublesome burrs which so often thrust upon us their unwelcome companionship.
