Mushrooms

THIS volume identifies the common fungi, with especial emphasis on the edible species, and warnings against the poisonous kinds. Photographs, coloured plates, and line drawings supplement the descriptions. The introductory chapters deal with general subjects, the haunts of fungi, their relation to higher and lower plants, and their life history "from spore to mushroom;" a comprehensive illustrated key to the families of fungi is given. Then the chapters follow, describing the principal species in each genus, and stating whether each is edible or not. The fungi with gills, with teeth, and with pores; coral-like, gelatinous, and slime fungi; puff balls, truffles and earth stars are described in their proper order.

The collecting and preparation of fungi for the herbarium is fully described; and a chapter is devoted to the gathering and preparing of edible mushrooms, with a long list of recipes.
