The species is very variable, and half a dozen forms have been named. The only differences existing between these forms are in the relative amount of black and white upon the upper side of the wings. The moth is found all through northern Europe and Asia, and is widely distributed through the northern United States and Canada as far west as Alaska, where it is very common.
