2026 Editor's Note: Commonly known as the red-humped caterpillar, this species is easily identified in its larval stage by a red, pronounced hump on the fourth body segment and a habit of resting with its rear end elevated. While the adult Schizura concinna is a drab, grayish-brown moth, the larvae can be significant defoliators of apple, cherry, walnut, and sweetgum trees. When threatened, these caterpillars exhibit a collective warning display, thrashing violently from side to side or regurgitating liquid to deter predators. (Ed: GG 2026-08-11)
