2026 Editor's Note: The linden looper (Erannis tiliaria) is a native North American insect known for periodic "boom and bust" population cycles that can lead to the defoliation of deciduous trees such as apple, birch, and oak. While adult males fly at night and are attracted to lights, the wingless females must crawl up host trunks to lay their eggs, which typically hatch at bud break in late spring. Significant historical outbreaks occurred in the Northeast during 1912, 1925, and 1962, though the species usually exists in low, non-damaging numbers. (Ed: GG 2026-08-11)
