Thick-head Flies

Thick-head Flies

2026 Editor's Note: Despite their name, Thick-head Flies are not defined by their head shape but by their parasitoid life cycle, with larvae that develop inside living bees. A female Myopa fly intercepts a bee in mid-air and inserts a single egg between its abdominal segments, with the host offering little resistance. To escape its host's dried body, the newly emerged adult inflates a balloon-like ptilinum on its head, a structure covered in hard scales to help it push through the soil. (Ed: DS 2026-08-11)
