2026 Editor's Note: While historically grouped together in some texts, modern entomology distinguishes between the orders Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) and Plecoptera (stoneflies). Stoneflies are characterized by having two sets of wings that they tuck tightly across their body at rest, whereas dragonflies and damselflies are identified by their large, hinged labium or lower jaw. Both groups serve as vital ecological indicators, as stoneflies and many caddisflies have a low tolerance to pollution and their presence often signals good water quality. (Ed: GG 2026-08-11)
