Salt-water Flies

Salt-water Flies

2026 Editor's Note: Ephydra hians, the Mono Lake diving fly, is a salt-water fly with a unique adaptation. It crawls underwater to feed and lay eggs, staying dry by creating aprotective bubble of air around its bodythanks to its dense, waxy hairs. This allows it to exploit the predator-free, food-rich depths of Mono Lake, a hypersaline body of water that isthree times saltier than the oceanand full of sodium carbonate and borax.
