2026 Editor's Note: Commonly known as green lacewings, these insects are members of the family Chrysopidae, a name derived from the Greek words for "gold" and "face." Their distinctive eggs are laid on long hair-like stalks, a feature that led early biologists to misidentify them as the fruiting bodies of a fungus. The predatory larvae, nicknamed aphid lions, use sickle-shaped jaws to inject venom into prey, and some species even camouflage themselves by carrying debris or dead prey on their backs.
