THE characters of this family are sufficiently shown in the accompanying illustration of the sergeant-fish, Rachycentron canadus.
This fish is an inhabitant of warm seas, ranging in summer as far north on our Atlantic Coast as Cape Cod. It is not uncommon from the Chesapeake Bay southward. It is known as sergeant-fish, crab-eater, coal-fish and cobia, and it reaches a length of 4 or 5 feet, and it is edible.
