Breeds in the Mississippi Valley north to Kansas, southern Indiana, and southern Illinois; east to western South Carolina; migrates southward, chiefly along the west Gulf coast, to Mexico and Central America. "The Sycamore Warbler is a common summer resident in the bottom-lands [of Illinois], where, according to the writer's experience, it lives chiefly in the large sycamore trees along or near the water courses. On this account it is a difficult bird to obtain during the breeding season, the male usually keeping in the topmost branches of the tallest trees, out of gunshot and often, practically, out of sight, although its presence is betrayed by its loud, very unwarblerlike song" (Ridgway).
